National Minimum Wage
Working hard all day and still not earning enough to live off? If you are aged 22 or over then your employer must pay you a wage of at least £5.52 an hour, regardless of the job you do.
If you are unsure of your hourly rate, look at your payslip and divide your gross pay (before deductions) by the number of hours worked in the period (week or month) that the pay slip applies to. This figure must be at least £5.52.
Younger workers should not despair. The development rate for 18-21 year olds and for workers receiving accredited training in the first 6 months of a new job is £4.60 per hour. There's also a minimum wage for 16 and 17-year olds, who must now be paid at least £3.40 an hour. These amounts were last set in October 2007.
